Between Microbiome and Market: How PENGUINBIO Is Rethinking Gut Health

At the core of the MedTech start-up PENGUINBIO lies a field that has long been underestimated but is now attracting increasing scientific and societal attention: gut health and its broader relevance to systemic processes within the human body.

Through its biomarker-based diagnostic approach, PENGUINBIO explores how complex biological changes may become measurable earlier and more precisely in the future. In doing so, the company operates at the intersection of preventive medicine, personalised diagnostics, and a growing public awareness of health and wellbeing.

PENGUINBIO was founded by Dr Peter Rappl and Desiree Schröder, a founding team that combines scientific expertise with entrepreneurial vision. Dr Rappl, a PhD-trained biochemist specialising in immunology and diagnostic methodologies, contributes extensive experience in the development of complex testing systems as well as operational leadership expertise from the diagnostics industry. Desiree Schröder complements the company with a strategic perspective on market dynamics and growth pathways. Drawing on her experience in the international distribution of life science and diagnostic solutions and in building high-performing go-to-market structures, she plays a future key role in advancing PENGUINBIO’s positioning within a competitive landscape.

PENGUINBIO is deliberately lean in structure, closely connected to research, and clearly growth-oriented. Collaborations with partners from science and diagnostics, alongside participation in regional innovation and funding networks, support the company’s continued development.

In 2026, PENGUINBIO secured €70,000 in funding to support its ongoing technological development.
