The Tokonoma Club represents a response to a gap that has become increasingly apparent in recent years. As traditional club structures come under pressure and creative spaces continue to disappear, Tokonoma emerges as a venue that rethinks the relationship between culture, community, and economic viability. Its founders, Fabian Annich and Toan Nguyen, address precisely the point at which many comparable concepts fail: the integration of cultural relevance with a sustainable business model. What began as a series of privately organised, curated event formats—particularly in Frankfurt’s Bahnhofsviertel—has evolved into a multifaceted platform. Through their agency, nomad.iv, the founders combine cultural programming, event management, and content creation into a cohesive and integrated approach. Within this framework, the Tokonoma Club operates as a hybrid cultural and event space that consciously departs from conventional club models.
Fabian Annich is responsible for concept development and commercial strategy, contributing a strong strategic perspective, while Toan Nguyen, as Creative Director, shapes the visual and conceptual identity and oversees operational execution. Together, they merge entrepreneurial thinking with a nuanced understanding of cultural dynamics—an intersection that defines the distinctiveness of the project. A defining feature of Tokonoma is its capacity to imbue spaces with emotional resonance. Rather than offering standardised event environments, it creates a setting characterised by a clear curatorial vision, aesthetic coherence, and a strong sense of identity. For the community, this translates into access to new formats and creative impulses; for businesses, it offers a platform through which brands can be experienced beyond conventional event logics. This dual relevance constitutes a key success factor in a market increasingly oriented towards authenticity and experiential engagement.
Located in Frankfurt’s Gutleut district, Tokonoma is deliberately positioned within a transforming urban environment. Situated at the intersection of increasing urban density, a growing creative scene, and an internationally oriented audience, the venue not only responds to existing demand but actively contributes to the emergence of new cultural dynamics.
To establish and operate the Tokonoma Club, nomad.iv GmbH secured a loan, complemented by guarantees and additional financing instruments such as sponsorship and rebate agreements. The funds have been primarily allocated to the leasing and development of the new club and event space in the Gutleut district, including renovation, spatial design, and infrastructural build-out—particularly for bar areas and flexible event usage. Further allocations support ongoing operational costs such as rent, personnel, and marketing, as well as the pre-financing of upcoming events. The overarching objective is to establish a financially sustainable structure from the outset, capable of supporting both cultural programming and commercial event formats in the long term.
