Between Timber Frames and Flat Whites – Coffee Culture at the Hühnermarkt

Located in the heart of Frankfurt’s historic old town, the café operated by Hoppenworth & Ploch at the Hühnermarkt has become a beloved destination for coffee enthusiasts and passersby alike. Since its opening in 2019 by Matthias Hoppenworth and Julian Ploch, the space has earned a reputation as one of the city’s most welcoming coffee venues.

The café offers a tranquil retreat amid the bustle of the old town. Its blend of modern interior design invites guests to linger – whether inside or on the terrace overlooking the Stoltze Fountain – while enjoying specialty coffee in a relaxed and thoughtfully designed environment.

The selection of coffee specialties rotates regularly to reflect the seasonal diversity of beans. Hoppenworth & Ploch place strong emphasis on transparency and sustainability in the supply chain. Their very own roastery, located in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen, ensures consistently high product quality.

In addition to excellent coffee, the café also offers a curated selection of fine pastries and light snacks. This combination of premium offerings and a central location makes it a popular meeting point for both locals and visitors.

Beyond their cafés, the two founders are actively involved in a variety of initiatives centered around coffee craftsmanship and sustainable business practices.

Matthias Hoppenworth is an accomplished barista and roasting specialist. In 2011, he won the German Latte Art Championship and placed eighth in the World Championship. He regularly shares his expertise through barista and roasting seminars held at their in-house roastery in Sachsenhausen.

As part of the Frankfurter Gründerfonds program, the two founders received EUR 50,000 to partially finance the interior build-out, invest in professional coffee equipment, and maintain a liquidity reserve to cover operating cost.
